Girls Alliance Incorporation (GAI) successfully commemorated International Women's Day 2026 through a one-day conference dedicated to promoting gender equality, women's empowerment, and inclusive participation. Held under the global theme, "Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls," the event brought together young women, community leaders, civil society organizations, government representatives, development partners, and other stakeholders to celebrate progress, discuss persistent challenges, and strengthen collective action for advancing the rights of women and girls in Sierra Leone.

Opening Ceremony

The conference commenced with Islamic and Christian prayers, followed by a cultural performance by GAI members. In her welcome address, Ms. Fatmata Sankoh, Executive Director of Girls Alliance Incorporation, emphasized the vital role women play in society and highlighted the remarkable achievements women continue to make locally and globally. She expressed appreciation to GAI's partners and reaffirmed the organization's commitment to creating safe, inclusive spaces where girls and young women can learn, lead, and reach their full potential.

Partner Remarks

Representing BRAC Sierra Leone, Ms. Princess Aruna commended GAI for its impactful work in empowering girls and young women. She provided an overview of BRAC's mission and reaffirmed the organization's commitment to promoting women's rights, preventing gender-based violence, and ensuring that all women and girls can live free from exploitation and discrimination.

Guest Speakers

Representatives from partner organizations and institutions delivered inspiring presentations focused on leadership, resilience, and women's empowerment.

• A representative from World Vision Sierra Leone highlighted the organization's ongoing efforts to empower women and girls and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting women as leaders and agents of change in their communities.

• Ms. Esther Finda Kandeh, Executive Director of Women in Mining, shared her experience of working in a traditionally male-dominated sector. She encouraged young women to remain resilient, work hard, manage their time effectively, and pursue opportunities with confidence and determination.

• A representative from the Ministry of Gender and Children's Affairs emphasized the importance of discipline, continuous learning, and self-development. She encouraged girls to invest in education, build leadership skills, and become responsible women who positively contribute to society.

Keynote Address

The keynote address was delivered by Mrs. Patricia Narsu Ndanema, Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone. Speaking on the 2026 International Women's Day theme, she challenged girls and young women to become architects of change rather than waiting for change to happen. She encouraged participants to understand the laws that protect and promote women's rights in Sierra Leone and to use digital platforms responsibly as tools for learning, advocacy, and personal growth.

The conference concluded with renewed commitment from participants and partners to continue advancing gender equality, protecting the rights of women and girls, and building a more inclusive society where every woman and girl can thrive.
